Patients undergoing scans of their brain, spine or other body parts lie flat on a scanning table and are placed in a magnet field created by a large magnet.
By creating a strong magnetic field, the magnet causes the spinning nuclei of hydrogen atoms within the body to change their axes of rotation – a physical phenomenon known as gyroscopic precession.
